Someone told you that the body temperature changes with age, when you smoke and …. when do you lie?
The temperature rises during smoking
The temperature at the tip of the cigarette is 95° C or 203° F. You inhale the hot smoke, and the temperature of the lungs rises. When the lungs overheat, they lose the ability to perform one of their functions – to cool the body. As a result, the body temperature rises. After you stop smoking, the temperature will return to normal within 20 minutes.
A cold heart will protect the brain
A cold heart is not such a bad thing, especially after a heart attack. Doctors from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore have developed a technique for lowering body temperature in order to prevent serious organ damage. Hypothermia is applied within 4 hours after a heart attack.
Cayenne pepper warms up
Red pepper not only improves the taste of dishes, but also raises the body temperature during digestion. Researchers from Purdue University asked people on a diet to add half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to their food to see if this contributes to weight loss. It has also been observed that red pepper reduces appetite and speeds up the expenditure of calories. And when burning calories temporarily increases body temperature. This is most evident if people do not add red pepper to their food all the time.
Men and women are not the same
Personal normal body temperature earlier formed in girls – by 13-14 years. In young men – about 18-20 years. After 25 years, the temperature differences between men and women are especially obvious: men are on the average “colder” women by half a degree!
The temperature reacts to a change in the hormonal level. Therefore, in women, the temperature varies depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle. In men, the temperature in the testicles is 1.5°C lower than on the rest of the body surface. The temperature of some parts of the body differs depending on the physical loads and their position.
At a cold ambient temperature, the body goes into a mode of energy conservation. It seeks to protect vital organs, such as the lungs, the brain, the heart, so more blood rushes to these organs than to the hands and feet. With women, this happens faster than with men. Therefore, in women more often than men, limbs freeze. Women begin to freeze if the temperature falls below 70°F (21°C), men – below 67°F (19.4°C) – 68°F (20°C).

The older – the colder
If you are constantly cold, even on hot summer days, the reason may be to age. As you age, body temperature decreases. Scientists from Turkey measured body temperature of 133 elderly people aged 65 to 74 years and found out that the temperature was lower than normal. In the age group 75-84, the temperature was even lower, and the lowest – over 85 years. For some, the temperature reached 93.5°F (34.1°C) under normal conditions.
Sleep in the coolness
Body temperature affects the quality of sleep. Scientists from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam found that people sleep better when the skin is cool. Participants in the study were given special costumes that lowered the skin temperature by less than 1 degree Celsius. The costumes did not affect the average body temperature, but the participants slept deeper and less often woke up. A particularly good result was shown by elderly participants complaining of insomnia.
Body temperature indicates the time of death
This is not a way to attract the attention of viewers of television shows. When a person dies, body temperature drops by 1.5 degrees per hour. If the medical expert determines the body temperature of the deceased within 24 hours from the moment of death, and the body was not at elevated or lowered temperature, the time of death can be determined from the body temperature. The first to find this fact was an English doctor and amateur chemist John Davy in 1839.
The cap does not always help
Do you remember how your mother pestered you so that you put on a hat when it’s cold outside, because the heat goes out through your head? She was wrong, according to the publication in the medical journal BMJ. When you lose heat, and the body temperature drops, it happens in all parts of the body at the same time. The amount of heat that you lose through your head depends on many factors: how thick your hair is, and how much energy you consume in the cold. But since the baby’s head is proportionately larger relative to the body surface, children can lose more heat if the head is uncovered.
High temperature is not always bad
According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, you have a fever when it is one degree higher than normal. We are afraid of temperature, but this can be a good sign. Temperature is the reaction of the immune system, which means that the body is fighting infection. In many cases, the higher the temperature, the more efforts the body makes to overcome the disease. But if the temperature does not subside after a few days or if the temperature is extremely high, ask for help.
