Here are some of the types of flies that you might find in the home…

House Fly – The most commonly seen fly in the home in the UK of course is the house fly. It is likely that you have left the window open on a warm day only to find that one or two have made their way in. To keep them away, use fly screens on the windows and make sure that there isn’t any food left out that could attract them.

Cluster Fly – These flies will tend to be in dark areas where they are not likely to be disturbed, so they are most likely to be in an attic. They also like to find places that are warm to spend the winter, hence their attraction to the home. Unlike many flies, they are not attracted by faeces or rotting food and don’t cause any damage in the home, they leave in the spring where they set off to look for vegetation outside.

Horse Fly – If you live in the countryside, it is more likely that you have come across these types of flies. They tend to be found around livestock which is what gives them their name and they feed on the blood of animals, but also will bite humans if given the chance, using their very sharp, blade-like jaws. The bites from these critters can become very nasty, and lead to infection, so you definitely don’t want them in your home!

Drain Fly – These flies are tan or grey looking and look similar to moths. They are attracted to stagnant, dirty water and raw sewage. If you find that you have them in your home or your garden, you likely have an issue with your plumbing that needs to be dealt with.

Bluebottle Fly – These larger flies are easy to identify due to their blue abdominal colouring. You are likely to spot them around bins in the summer, as well as on animal faeces, so if you have pets in the house, they are more likely to be attracted to your home.

Like many flies, because of their habits of hanging around on faeces and in dustbins, they have the potential to spread disease, so you should get rid of them from your home if you find them in there.
